Detection of targeted catch crops using Sentinel -1 data

Use of targeted catch crops is one of the nitrogen reduction initiatives intended to compensate for relaxation of the Food and Agricultural Package, which gave Danish farmers the option to increase the use of fertilizer on their fields. Targeted catch crops help ensure that there is no deterioration of our coastal waters and groundwater.

The Danish Agrifish Agency is responsible for determining whether registered catch crop fields are established at the right time and with the intended effect.  Freely available Sentinel-1 data is suitable for this purpose because data collection takes place using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which is unaffected by the often dense cloud cover over Denmark. Among other things, the Sentinel-1 satellites detect changes in surface structure, e.g. the gradual transition from bare soil to vegetation.

We currently envision a project in which perhaps a master student with experience with GIS and handling large amounts of geodata will detect changes in the radar signal at field level and possibly display results using a web service on a regular basis. Access to these results will play a major role in the planning of physical inspection visits.

In this project you can get the opportunity to focus on satellite data and GIS, and work with machine learning applied to geodata, which are skills increasingly in demand.
