A municipal waste gasification plant is going to be Integrated with a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) plant and with district heating (DH) or district cooling (DC) depending on the need. Different plant design will be proposed and analyzed. Plants efficiency, plants performance as well as plants technoeconomy shall be investigated.
In this project, a gasification plant fed by municipal solid waste is going to be designed. The product gases from the gasification plant will then be sent to a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) plant to produce electricity. The wasted heat can be used for district heating (DH) or district cooling (DC) depending on the need. Different plant design will be proposed and analyzed. Plants efficiency, plant performance as well as thermoeconomy shall be investigated.
Waste from a municipal usually is burned to produce heat. However, it is possible to gasify the solid waste in and produce biogas, which can directly be fed to the anode side of a solid oxide fuel cell. Such integration makes it possible to produce electricity and heat simultaneously. The produced heat can then be used for district heating in the municipal. However, it is also possible to integrate an absorption plant as a bottoming cycle and produce district cooling.
All the simulations shall be carried out in our in-house code which is developed for such purposes. The size of the plant would depend on the amount of solid waste from the chosen city/town. The student is free to choose any city/town
