Bioplastic is an umbrella term for polymeric plastic materials which have been developed during the last decades as an alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. The defined bioplastic, a plastic material should have at least one of the following characteristics: i) be produced from biomass feedstock; ii) be biologically degradable (i.e. biodegradable); iii) be produced through biological synthesis processes. Production and commercialization of bioplastic has currently a great momentum, as it may contribute to reduce reliance on fossil oil (if biomass-based) or to alleviate some of the environmental problems linked to the uncontrolled release of plastic in the environment (if biodegradable). A main application of biodegradable plastic is the production of disposal (i.e. monouse) cutlery and containers. While this items are currently disposed with residual waste, an alternative could be the implementation of a return system where plastic could be recycled in close-loops for the production of new plastic.

This project will contribute to the development of innovative ideas for implementing close-loop recycling of biodegradable plastic packaging. Activities include:

-          Identify and evaluate concept and possibilities for close-loop recycling of biodegradable plastic packaging

-          Develop a refinery concept for grinding, processing and extracting lactide and PLA from biodegradable plastic packaging to be readily used to press new plastic packaging

-          Developing and building a press machine for new cups

Test the concept on disposable packaging used and disposed at DTU SkyLab
