Analysis design and optimization of a power to gas system with District Heating implementation

P2G (Power to Gas) is a technology that converts power to fuel and therefore can be utilized as an alternative way of electricity storage. When electricity prices are low, power from wind energy can be converted into hydrogen by means of an electrolyzer. The produced hydrogen together with CO2 can then be reformatted into CH4 through a methanation process. Methane is very similar to natural gas and therefore it can easily be supplied to the gas grid.

In this project, an Alkaline and a SOEC electrolyzer will be used to study the performance comparison of the two systems from thermodynamic as well as economic view. In both systems a methanator will be added to study the fuel production (besides hydrogen). Thus there is a need for improvement that can be achieved by using district heating in the system.

This project should investigate the potential and feasibility for implementing district heating into the process in order to improve system efficiency. This shall be done from energy and economical viewpoints.
