Summary

Carrying out experiments are usually time consuming and expensive. Therefore, one alternative to reduce the experimental time and cost to use model-based computer-aided tools in order to replicate the experiments. The use of computer-aided tools enables to test various alternatives on a given process system and only go into the lab to verify and evaluate the most promising options.

The aim of this project is to develop a computer-aided tool to facilitate the evaluation of a fermentation process under various operating conditions. That is, a virtual laboratory where different fermenter designs, reactions and conditions for a fermentation process can be tested, evaluated and simulated.

The development of the tool is accomplished within the PROSYS Research Center at DTU Chemical Engineering with interaction with DTU LearnT. DTU LearnT has significant experience in teaching and education for modeling and model-based methods and this knowledge is incorporated in the tool. The development of the tool is facilitated by using models already developed at PROSYS, where several researchers have experience with programming of chemical engineering tools and the facilitation of methods and models developed in the center as software tools. 

Requirements

We are looking for an ambitious and highly motivated MSc student in engineering with the following skills:

·        General knowledge of mathematical modelling and model-based approaches

·        Strong skills in a programming language (for example C/C#, Python)

·        Knowledge of modelling of biological systems and especially fermentations is an advantage but not a requirement.

·        An interest in teaching/e-learning is an advantage

Note

The project is also very well suited for a group of students.

Place

The PROSYS Research Center at the Technical University of Denmark is a global leading center in the area of model-based computer-aided design of chemical and biochemical processes. It is located at the department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at DTU Lyngby Campus.
