Regional Mapping of Waste Heat Sources and Evaluation of Industrial Symbioses

There is a large amount of excess heat emitted from industries, waste water treatment plants, supermarkets, data centers and other sources. Many of these sources are currently not utilized, due to a lack of information. Some of this waste heat could be utilized for e.g. process or district heat, and thereby reducing primary energy use. The utilization of the waste heat can sometimes be challenging, as heat pumps or long transmission pipelines are required.

The project will determine and map waste heat sources and heating demands in a region of Denmark. Based on the findings possible projects will be identified and evaluated, based on private and socio-economic considerations.

The aim of the project is to carry out an in-depth study of opportunities for waste heat recovery by creating symbioses between sources and possible users of this heat. The elements of such a study will consist amongst others:

(i) develop a method to identify and quantify excess heat sources and heating demands

(ii) propose and model technical solutions for the recovery of excess heat

(iii) analyse and evaluate opportunities based on private and socio-economic principles

(iv) perform technical, economic and sustainability assessments of the proposed solutions.


The candidate (s) will be supervised and supported by members of the Section for Thermal Energy at the Mechanical Engineering department and Management Engineering at DTU.

The project can be carried out as a Master, Bachelor or special course. The scope of the project can be adjusted to match the candiates interests and ideas.

The students are required to have a background in energy planning, energy engineering or sustainable energy. Knowledge about pinch analysis and GIS is beneficial but not a requirement. The work will be in close collaboration with industrial partners and Danish regions, the students are therefore required to show a high level of organizational and communication skills (e.g. organize project meetings, organizing data collection with partners).
