Translating weather forecasts into urban drainage forecasts

Many of the largest cities in Denmark have been affected by heavy rainfall in the last couple of years. When that happens large amounts of water runs off paved surfaces and enters the sewer system. In extreme cases, this can lead to urban flooding, overflow from the sewers to the natural environment, and cause problems at the downstream wastewater treatment plants.

Modern drainage systems are equipped with storage tanks, pumps and valves that can be used to control where we want the water to flow in the system. It often takes time to implement a specific control strategy and we are therefore interested in being able to forecast where, when and how much rainfall we will see in the near future.

The Danish Meteorological Institute provides several different types of weather forecasts to DTU Environment, which are based on either weather radar information, large-scale computer simulations, or both. However, the weather forecasts come with biases and limited uncertainty descriptions that need to be accounted for.

The project aims at investigating how these forecasts can actively be used to optimize the operation of integrated urban water systems during medium to large rainfall events. The project will involve case studies in Copenhagen and/or Aarhus and can be tailored to the student’s specific interests. We can for instance choose to focus more on rainfall analysis or on various modeling aspects. The project is linked to the Water Smart Cities research project (www.watersmartcities.ennv.org) and might involve a collaboration with Krüger A/S.

Forudsætninger

This project requires good modelling skills and some basic statistics (e.g. as taught in 12104). Basic knowledge of either R, Python or Matlab would be great.
