Danish utilities are currently implementing central drinking water softening,
which has a number of positive effects in households due to reduced problems
with lime scaling and consumption of soap and detergents.
Copenhagen utility, HOFOR, is implementing drinking water softening at their
waterworks during the next years. As part of the implementation, HOFOR has created
a novel distribution networks model that integrates the water hardness (water
quality) in the hydraulic model.
project aims at calibrating the model and further examine how water hardness
varies in the distribution networks as water softening is gradually
implemented. This will enable better prediction of the effects from centralised water softening and improve its implementation.
