Background:
Each year students from DTU participate in the international competition Aureoles in Netherlands where a number of student teams from universities across the world compete in the design of a wind-car. The wind car is a single-seat roadster which can only be powered by the power of the wind at that instant of time (no energy storage). See the picture below. DTU is proud world record holder of the wind-car speed, the first team to reach car speeds higher than 100% wind speed. DTU is also the first university to seriously investigate the possibility of using the electrical power transition between the wind turbine and the wheels. The main motivation for doing so is the increase in the efficiency of the wind car operation, and hopefully even higher speeds.

 Project description:
In this project student will work on the development board from Texas Instrument, DRV8301. The primary goal is to develop the Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using available code examples from TI and Code Composer studio. The developed control must be able to operate with variable DC voltage as the DC voltage level will need to adopt to the wind turbine generator. The secondary control objective is to correlate the DC link voltage to the torque reference for the motor. The average DC link voltage is, hence, controlled by appropriate torque reference of the motor while the set point of the DC link voltage is determent by wind speed measurement and appropriate MPPT lookup table.
Tasks: Depending on the student’s ambitions, the project can consist from following steps
- Dynamic electro-mechanical model (Simulink) of the wind car, IFOC and the  control functionality
- Implementing IFOC on DRV8031
- Testing operation with variable DC voltage
- Testing the performance on the implemented control in the wind car test runs
