3D metal print effect of process parameters on the metallurgical quality of printes parts

3D metal printing is a technology in rapid growth. At DTU Mechanical Engineering, we have invested in new metal printers and are therefore offering student projects in this field.

Though metal printing by many is considered a state-of-the-art technology, it is still a new addition to the many manufacturing processes we can choose between in our production systems.

There are many unanswered questions related to 3D metal printing, many of them are related to how processing parameters influence the microstructure and metallurgical quality of the printed parts. The term ”Metallurgical Quality” is, of course, related to the microstructure that forms when we print components, but it also covers topics like residual stress and cracking due to stresses as well as formation of porosity, inclusions and oxides that can form during processing.

We have today 3D printers available that allow us to wary process parameters and printing material freely, so that we can study effects of varying process parameters on the structure and properties of the printed components.

This is a very wide area of research and there are many possibilities to create specific projects of varying length and complexity for students that look for projects that combine processing and materials science, and who are interested to work in a field with a high degree of novelty.
