Background

DCCT Main Control Module (MCM) consists of analog circuitry for exciting and sensing the Flux-gate detector, as well as measuring the induced voltage on the AC feedback winding and driving the compensation winding. Today, the output current through the compensation winding is driven by a linear amplifier supplied from constant voltage source, which unfortunately results in significant power loss in the driver. These losses has a detrimental effect to power consumption, cooling needs, and last but not least product robustness and reliability. Common ways of solving these challenges in similar applications is changing to switch-mode power amplifier (Class D) or using the aforementioned linear amplifier supplied from a tracking power suppy with variable output voltage (i.e. high speed, high bandwidth switch-mode power supply). Some of the challenges to overcome are how to keep the low noise levels of the output current expected from a high performance DCCT.

 

Objective

You start by learning the principles of Danisense proprietary Zero-flux Flux-gate DCCT technology and finding out how its building principles positively affect the transducer performance with respect to accuracy, drift, immunity against external magnetic fields etc. With this background in mind you brainstorm together with Danisense R&D team on the possibilities for reducing the power losses of the output current amplifier, like Class-D and tracking PSU. You investigate the possibilities for boosting the amplifier supply voltage above the supply voltage rails to overcome cable resistance and allow using higher burden resistance. You analyze the advantages and drawbacks of each principle and propose solutions to overcome the noise problem. Eventually you develop, build and test a prototype MCM with reduced power losses to benchmark the performance against state-of-the-art Danisense products.

Forudsætninger

University students with background in electrical engineering in their final semester, having the necessary knowledge and interest in power electronics.
