Effects of water turbidity on the fitness of fish
Turbidity of coastal waters caused by anthropogenic land use, or in aquaculture production systems from increased organic loading can be a major stressor in fishes. Several studies have shown that this causes pathological changes in the gills, and leads to reduced fitness, primarily by reductions in growth. The exact mechanisms for this are not known, and several species specific differences exist. The aim of the present project is to examine how increasing turbidity levels influence gill structure, feeding, and metabolism, in fishes, using rainbow trout as a model organism. Turbidity can be created using coastal sediment or organic material, depending on the interest of the student. Contact the supervisor for a discussion of possibilities and more detail.
