Treatment for peanut allergy

Food allergy is defined as an immune mediated adverse reaction to otherwise harmless proteins in the food, caused by a failure of the immune system to develop tolerance after exposure to these proteins. Food allergy is a major health problem in Western countries, where it affects around 5-8% of young children and 2-4% of adults, and appears to be an increasing problem. Especially peanut allergy is a health problem of growing concern, as peanut allergy is the most serious form of food allergy in terms of prevalence, severity and persistence. Peanut-induced anaphylaxis may occur even after exposure to trace amounts and is the single leading cause of anaphylaxis, and annually causes around 30,000 emergency visits and 150 fetal reactions in the US. Peanut allergy is thus an obvious candidate for food allergy therapeutic approaches.

 

However, research for more than a decade in peanut allergy immunotherapy, has not yet resulted in any accepted satisfactory therapeutic approaches, due to the high rate of unpredictable severe adverse reactions. Therefore, to date no treatment has been developed, and strict avoidance of the offending food is presently the only trustworthy management of this disease. Living with food avoidance has a huge impact on the quality of life of food allergic patients and their families living in daily fear of serious or even fatal reactions. The need for efficient methods for prevention and treatment is therefore evident.

 

The aim of this project is to make a thorough literature study on approached used for treatment of peanut allergy, including clinical studies as well as pre-clinical studies. The review should be based on original papers, patents as well as internet searches, and provide information on eg. the research stage, the strategy used, the go-to marked strategy etc.
