Moving Towards Bio-Based Cities - Upgrading of Organic Waste into High Valued Products

Background

Most organic biowaste from cities is processed into compost and biogas, used for energy recovery and nutrient recycling back to land. This approach provides, however, low profit. At the Bioenergy group we are applying novel biotechnologies to valorize and upgrade different fractions of organic biowaste into high-valued bio-based products, including – but not limited to – proteins, bio-succinic acid or bio-methane. The project is in close collaboration with the Copenhagen municipality.

Aim

To operate and optimize bacterial or algal processes for nutrient valorization and carbon recovery from urban organic waste. To analyze the economy of the process by setting simple mass flow and energy balance analysis.

Approach

The project will be developed stepwise. In a first stage pretreated bio-waste provided by Copenhagen municipality is characterized. Based on feedstock characterization, the bioreactor operation is defined. The bioreactor is run for production of the selected bio-based product, which productivity is optimized in terms of product quality and quantity under relatively dynamic conditions (e.g., biowaste will be regularly provided and quality may vary). Based on the experimental data, the student will perform simple mass flow analysis of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus during the process and in the overall context of bio-waste management at the city level, taking into account the end-use of the bio-based product. Energy and cost analysis will be also performed to assess the feasibility of the concept as a solution for the Copenhagen municipality.
