Benefit of combining cooling and heating in cold district heating systems

Cold and ultra-low temperature district heating units are proposed as they enable the recovery of low temperature renewable heat sources and very low heat losses in the distribution pipes due to the low distribution temperature. This means however, that every building needs to have a further heating unit, e.g. a heat pump that can lift up the temperature from the district heating line to temperatures high enough for space heating and domestic hot water preparation. So far it seems like these ultra-low temperature district heating systems are economically less feasible than conventional district heating at low temperature (60 °C forward). However, it is expected that the economic feasibility can be greatly improved when the same distribution grid is also used as a cold utility e.g. to cool office buildings. This project could involve an energy- and exergy analysis of a possible system for a whole year and should also include an evaluation of the economic feasibility (there are tools available you could built up on).
