Use of secondary resources in Circular Construction (project families)

Our research supports the transition towards a circular economy for construction materials, in that increased use of secondary resources is necessary in order to decouple economic growth from the pressure on natural resources. The construction section and the build environment use 1/2 of all raw materials used in EU. Also the concrete industry is responsible for 5-8 % of the antropogenic CO2 emissions due to the use of cement. Thus, there is a huge potential for the use of secondary resources.  

For spring 2021 project families within the following topics (directly linked to our research) are offered:

1) Pretreating mine waste for optimized use as partial cement replacement (contact Wolfgang Kunther - wolku@byg.dtu.dk)


2) Brick waste powder as partial cement replacement in mortars (contact Ida Bertelsen - imgber@byg.dtu.dk)


3)Bio-based concrete composites for large scale 3D printing (contact Julian Christ julch@byg.dtu.dk)

4) Alkali-activation of MSWI fly ash (contact Gunvor M. Kirkelund - gunki@byg.dtu.dk)

 

 
The projects are organised in experimental project families of 4- 6 students for each topic. The students still work on an individual projects (1 or 2 students) within the predefined topic of the project familiy. There will be weekly supervisor meetings with the whole project family. The students in a project family are expected to contribute actively to the group, both in supervisor meetings and during the laboratory work.  A mid-term poster session where the students present their results so far will be arranged.  

Theoretical projects are also a possibility witin the topics.

We keep the right to merge project families, in case of  to few students in any of the families. BSc and BEng projects can be written in Danish, however, supervisor meetings may be in English due to MSc students.
