What is Smart Ventilation
Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre (AIVC.org) has recently published a definition of "smart ventilation". Smart  ventilation is defined as a process to continually adjust   the ventilation system to provide the desired Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) benefits while minimizing energy consumption, utility bills and other non-IAQ costs (such as thermal discomfort or noise). This requires that the ventilation system is not only controlling the amount of air according to different measured quantities (CO2 concentration, humidity, temperature, etc.), but also that it is responsive to electricity grid needs providing flexibility to electricity demand. Moreover, smart ventilation system should be able to inform its users and operators about its own performance and allow for on going commissioning.
Implementation of smart ventilation is especially challenging in residential sector, as these buildings are rarely equipped by extensive Building Management System including sensors, controllers and monitoring systems. On the other hand, as mechanical ventilation becomes more and more part of our homes, it is crucial that these systems operate as intended to provide desired IAQ.

Why Smart Ventilation Lab?
DTU BYG is already now involved in several projects related to smart residential ventilation. In order to extend the current research as well as to include the research findings into educational activities, DTU BYG considers establishing a Smart Ventilation Laboratory. The laboratory should serve for testing of new residential ventilation systems and their components, ventilation  concepts and strategies as well as a facility for teaching activities in courses related to ventilation design and operation. 

Objective
Objective of the project will be to design primary components of the future smart ventilation laboratory. This includes test room specification, size and disposition, basic ventilation system, its components and control, suggestions for basic measurements and technologies to be applied (temperature and airflow measurements, etc.). Conducting necessary calculations & simulations as well as producing documentation in form of drawings and technical specifications. Several alternatives of the design should be considered.

The project will be conducted in close cooperation with DTU BYGs researchers. It is expected that the project will include addressing companies that can provide particular technologies - ventilation units, components, controllers, sensors, etc.
