To succeed in reaching the ambitious sustainability goals in energy production, many different renewable energy sources are investigated. Nowadays great attention is devoted towards the economically exploitation of freely available low-temperature heat sources and the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) technology is one of the most promising power technologies for the exploitation of such. To put the developed theory into practice, an experimental ORC test rig is set up at the DTU MEK laboratories.

The objective of the project is to write and design a data acquisition (DAQ) and control software for the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) experimental test set-up.

DAQ is the process of measuring an electrical or physical phenomenon such as voltage, current, temperature, pressure, and much more with a PC. The project involves the selection of suitable measurement instrumentation, measurement hardware and creating as well as testing the software, preferably written in LabVIEW. The student will develop a great understanding of the measurement process as well as strengthen his troubleshooting skills by systematically find the source of a problem with simple tricks and tests and then employ a solution to that problem.

The expected outcome of this project is the control and data acquisition software to test, monitor, control and analyze an experimental set-up for organic Rankine cycles.

The project will be carried out at the Thermal Energy Section (TES) of the Mechanical Engineering Department. According to the personal preferences of the candidate, the specific topic and extend of the work can be adjusted (special course or master thesis).
