Integrated Optimization of Wind Energy Coupled Energy Storage System via Retired EV Batteries for Minimizing the LCOD

To alleviate the retirement pressure of EV batteries, the application of retired EV batteries in energy storage for second-life use has gained significant attentions. In the upcoming years, it is expected that thousands of EV batteries will be decommissioned which draws concerns of retired EV battery disposal. Instead of recycling or sending them immediately to landfills, these battery systems could be repurposed in other applications. In this paper, the profitability of installing the retired battery for the offshore wind farm is investigated. The characteristic of the retired battery will be modeled and considered in the proposed optimization work. The levelised cost of delivery (LCOD) is selected as the evaluation index. The wind energy based battery storage system is expected to take part in both the day-ahead market and frequency reserve market in Norway for increasing profits. Besides, the converter size should be optimized simultaneously with the operational control of the proposed hybrid energy system so that a more cost-effective wind farm could be realized.
