A goal of this project is to develop a method for quantifying the blockage of the upper airways based on the volumetric CT data. This includes segmentation of the upper airways and a shape analysis of the upper airways.
Project is shared between 3D Craniofacial Image Research Laboratory (joint research laboratory between KU, Rigshospitalet and DTU) and DTU Compute.
Description of the problem:
Partial blockage of the upper airway may occur as a result of trauma or disease. Blockage may be diagnosed by visually inspecting a CT scan. However, this does not quantify the blockage. The goal of this project is to investigate possibilities for quantifying the blockage of the upper airways based on the volumetric CT data.
Initially, segmentation of the upper airways should be obtained. Furthermore, shape analysis of the upper airways should be preformed. This may include skeletonization (finding a line which is a good representation of the airway) and quantifying the area (and the shape) of the airway cross sections along the skeleton. Project may be extended with additional questions, e.g. how does the resolution of the CT scan influence the quantification?
Two sets of data are available (CT scans with resolution 0.5mm x 0.5mm x 1mm) at the 3D Craniofacial Image Research Laboratory. Some of the supervision might be at 3D Craniofacial Image Research Laboratory.
The developed method should be implemented in matlab or python.
