Get hands-on experience with the newest satellite imagery and bathymetric data, and become a core developer of tools that have applications in the real world. 

Bathymetric surveying in Greenland is challenging due to harsh conditions, hazardous rocks, logistics, dependent on season etc. At present time, the hydrographic surveyors (Danish Defense) are mainly using multibeam systems by ship, which are quite accurate and reliable but limited concerning survey coverage and time. Any means of supporting/complementing the current surveying approaches could show great potential in Greenland. Satellite Derived Bathymetry (SDB) methods have shown potential for hydrography in some areas of the world, and The Danish Geodata Agency is therefore very interested in further research into these methods applied to the Arctic region.

This master’s project consist of different stages:

-          Pre-processing of satellite imagery (atmospheric correction, deglint etc.).

-          Masking (land, clouds, white caps).

-          Development of inversion code à retrieval of water depth, optical properties and bottom type.

-          Analysis of the results and compare to other methods.

The student can choose to focus on parts or all of above stages. It is expected that the student will develop tools for at least two of the stages.
