Background

Emissions of S and N to the environment have serious consequences for our health and contribute widely to acid rain. To help alleviating this problem, Haldor Topsøe A/S produces the BRIM catalysts for oil refineries to clean up different oil distillates by so-called hydrotreating processing. The BRIM catalysts are based on MoS2 nanostructures dispersed on a high-surface area alumina ceramic carrier. To guide the development of new generation BRIM catalysts a thorough understanding of the synthesis, structure and properties of the MoS2 nanomaterials are needed. New insight at the level of single atoms and in real-time into these issues is envisaged to come from advances in Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.

The Project

This project focusses on characterizing the atomic structure of well-defined MoS2 platelets, fullerenes structures and nanotubes by Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.
