Projects are offered for the research areas in the Microwaves and Remote Sensing group at DTU Space, i.e. development, design, and implementation of microwave sensors including radar and radiometer systems, and development and applications of advanced methods for processing of data from airborne and satellite sensors.

Microwave remote sensing deals with development of microwave sensors, both passive (microwave radiometers) and active (radars) sensors for observation of the surface of the Earth, e.g. the inland ice, the sea ice, the ocean, vegetation and the soil, as well as development of advanced methods for processing and interpretation of data from such sensors. Projects are offered within both of these areas of microwave remote sensing.

Projects about microwave sensors may for instance be about 1) designing, modeling, and simulating a system to a specific application with the related user requirements, 2) designing, developing and implementing parts of such systems in hardware, including the use of analogue electronics, fast digital electronics, and microwave techniques, and antennas, and 3) designing, developing, and implementing hardware related advanced signal processing methods for processing of signals and data in such systems. A project within this field will give you a very good opportunity to work with different types of hardware and the related signals.

Projects about advanced methods for processing and interpretation of data from microwave sensors may for instance be about 1) designing, developing and implementing methods for processing and interpretation of data from interferometric SAR to determine glacier velocities, digital elevation models, and subsidence of areas in cityes, 2) designing, developing, and implementing methods for processing, modelling, and interpretation of data from polarimetric SAR to determine sea ice concentration and drift, vegetation type and soil moisture, and to produce topographic maps, and 3) designing, developing and implementing methods for processing and interpretation of data from microwave radiometers to determine soil moisture and salinity. A project within this field will give you a very good opportunity to work with advanced signal- and data processing methods, with electromagnetic modelling, with statistical image processing methods, and with programming.
