Developmetnt of a new 3D printer for production of ceramic components

In our 3D printing lab we have built a prototype of a printer that is able to print structures in sand and other ceramic materials using an environmentally friendly binder system. These are materials that are of  great interest to several brances of industries where they can be used for moulds and cores for metal, concrete and polymer castings or to manufacture ”green parts” in ceramics that are subsequiently sintered to solid components.

There are very few suppliers to this market, most of which use binders based on toxic organic materials. Our system uses an inorganic binder to the benefit of the working environment and reducing waste problems.

We look for students that are interested in working with optimisation of 3D printing systems and who are keen to build devices of their own so that we can move the first prototype closer to ann industrially useful system.

In the project there is a possibility to work together with several Danish users of printed moulds and International suppliers of binders.

This is a very wide area of research and there are many possibilities to create specific projects of varying length and complexity for students that look for projects that combine processing and materials science, and who are interested to work in a field with a high degree of novelty.
