Imagine if we could create collaborative citizen science/innovation and make technological systems that would actually be able to enable practical support to biodiversity and prevent species from dying out?
Problem: Our planet’s diverse, thriving ecosystems may seem like permanent fixtures, but they’re actually vulnerable to collapse. Jungles can become deserts, and reefs can become lifeless rocks. What makes one ecosystem strong and another weak in the face of change? The answer to this, to a large extent, is biodiversity (Kim Preshoff, 2018). This problem concerns many people all over the world. But the problem is often, that though we would like to be able to act, we often know too little about what should be done, and how we can act.
Technology provides us with new opportunities to collaborate and work together across of time and space.
The question is if we could create “Digital habitats” (Wenger, 2009) - small digital societies, that in qualified ways could work to support biodiversity (Greenfacts, 2018). This could through a technological platform, that could scaffold and support the development of cross disciplinary, cross-country, cross-time and place, cross…? collaboration, that gave new possibilities for people all over the world to help species from dying out and ecosystems to survive. A platform, that could help anyone interested in becoming able to contribute in various kinds of ways, no matter what their skills were and how much time they had.
At learnT we already have a student, that has started developing this project as a kind of LinkedIn platform for biodiversity project owners and helpers. It is possible for you to participate by building and expanding this project, or by creating new initiatives, that support the same case. Our intent is to collaborate with organisations, that has relevant knowledge about real issues within Biodiversity. We also consider to collaborate with students from other relevant subject areas in this project: Biology, law, and economy.

Perspectives: What generic things could be learned, that would contribute to platforms that could help preserve other animals or ecosystems? Perhaps some big platform developers would like to go into these kinds of projects later? We already have heard from interested organisations.
Tasks: The assignments involved could for example be: creating/inventing a collaborative platform, that could be symbolized as a digital “house/company/spare-time-place”. In the rooms of this house, people would “live” (have access). The roles of these people could for example be: persons + technology that: coordinated relevant tasks, communicated to community, collected relevant data, made overview of and analyzed data, parted data into meaningful bits, identified and formulated problems, created small work packages of these problems, sent out these problems to problem solvers, created problem solving areas “in the house”, defined how the solutions for problems could be reformulated into new problems or created work packages for the actions that problem solvers should take action on etc. Another part of the development is to investigate how to give meaningful feedback, so the participants through feedback know how they have contributed to the common good.
Purpose: The result would be that anyone and everyone could help solve the problem, no matter where they lived on the planet, taking whatever small or large responsibility, and thereby provide new possibilities for gathering a workforce that help ecosystems to survive, though the local people don’t have resources to enable this.
