Analysis of control scheme for sink-media in advanced heat exchanger networks for heat pump systems

For large-scale ammonia heat pumps with a high sink temperature glide, the integration scheme of the various sink heat exchangers is an important factor, in order to obtain a high COP. This is the case for many district heating plants and some industrial applications. Considering two two-stage heat pumps in series, it is common practice to deploy as many as 12 heat exchangers for heating the sink, depending mainly on the compressor technology and the sink glide. However, some integration schemes require sophisticated control strategies, and consequently high pressure losses from valves, to allow operation in both design conditions as well as part load scenarios. This is the case, as the heat duty of the individual heat exchangers vary significantly.

The student is expected to propose preliminary design of control systems and compare the performance for a number of heat pump configurations. The point of departure could be a specification of the heat duty and size of individual heat exchangers in design conditions and heat duty for a number of predefined off-design conditions. The assignment includes the following topics:

-          The need for flow instrumentation and control valves of various configurations

-          Analysis of operational constraints for the configurations

-          The pressure losses of the control valves and heat exchangers in design and off-design.

-          The influence of pump work on the overall COP of the heat pump system.
