BIO-AQUA is a smaller Danish company producing water treatment solutions for the food processing and water management industry. The solutions are developed by BIO-AQUA and delivered to customers worldwide, from Norway to Indonesia.

In water handling, bacteria are grown to reduce the organic load of the water. Tanks are continuously aerated to allow for aerobic degradation. Aeration is a well-known technique, but it is traditionally both energy consuming and can be difficult to service. The BIO-AQUA technology is simple and effective. In one system it relies on a hollow shaft with a motor placed above the water, see picture, in another solution it relies on a submerged motor with an impeller solution. This last approach is beneficial in warm climates which ensure minimum problems with heating of the motor and impact of dust. The principles are simple, it allows for easy maintenance and low cost of the equipment production. The aeration is conducted by the impeller drawing air down from the surface through a PE plastic pipe which has a diameter just large enough to pull the impeller and motor up to the surface for service. The tank is equipped with a fixed plastic matrix where-on a biofilm will grow. The matrix is fitted on a support which allows for efficient aeration below the bacteria, in the bottom 60 cm of the tank.

The aim of the project is to determine the aeration efficiency of the existing impeller and motor, givin in kg O2 per kW. This can be done firstly by placing a motor and impeller in an existing tank at DTU and measure aeration curves of water.

The experimental work will be carried out investigating the following variables:

  • Design of impeller and screen above impeller

  • Distance between the inner pipe and the impeller

  • RPM of the motor

  • Placement of matrix and distance to matrix

The learning objectives are as follows:

  1. Describe learnings from aeration in literature and present basic theory of aeration

  2. Plan an experimental campaign using typical aeration and BioAqua aeration

  3. Conduct a typical aeration experiment

  4. Perform measurements with BioAqua aeration equipment using the variables above

  5. Compare aeration experimental from literature with experiment form traditional aeration and BioAqua aeration

  6. Develop a simplified correlation which describe the efficiency of BioAqua aeration and energy consumption

  7. Communicate the findings to research personal doing advanced CFD modelling

  8. Summarize and discuss the obtained  results

  9. Disseminate the results in a report and presentation
