with so-called colour centers created e.g. by nitrogen-vacancies (NV centers)
are a new type of fluorescent markers with high bio-compatibility. In addition,
these micro-diamonds may be used for very precise measurements of magnetic
fields and electromagnetic signals, and also for precise determination of
temperature, by clever exploitation of the material properties of the diamond.
At DTU Physics, we work with improvements of NV-diamond-sensing with focus on
applications with and within biological systems. In one application, we aim to
perform intracellular measurements on single cells, and for that purpose, need
to have cells with internalized micro-diamonds. The goal of the present student
project is to develop a protocol for efficient internalization of micro-diamonds
in the monocyte cell line THP-1. Internalization efficacies and biocompatibility
of the process as well as fate of diamonds during cell divisions will be
followed by fluorescent microscopy.
