Recreational fisheries for cod-Changes in catches and angler behavior during times of changing regulations

Aim:

1)     To explore temporal changes in catches, release rates, and participant demography, using data from an interview survey of recreational anglers, fishing for cod, during a period with changes in fisheries regulations.

2)     To explore temporal changes in angler behavior and angler satisfaction among interview survey participants, fishing for cod, during a period with changes in fisheries regulations.

Background:

Recreational fisheries such as fishing with a reel and rod,( i.e. angling), is an important activity for many reasons. Recreational fishers invest time and money in their activity, and therefore, depending on participation rates, socioeconomic benefits of the activity can be considerable. In contrast, recreational fisheries can give rise to environmental problems such as disturbance of wild life, thrash dumping, fishing gear pollution and bait digging. Additionally, recreational fishing can result in overfishing. Hence, for some fish populations, the fishing mortality induced from recreational fisheries is included in stock assessments in combination with estimates of fishing mortality from the commercial sector. For these reasons catches, from recreational fishers, of fish from populations such as the Atlantic salmon in the Baltic Sea and the Western Baltic cod is regularly monitored through different methods, e.g.  online recall surveys or creel surveys (i.e., interviews at the fishing site) Since catch rates are related to angler behavior, data regarding human dimensions aspects (e.g., angler motivations, involvement, and satisfaction) are also collected.

Content:

Western Baltic cod is overfished and regulations in both commercial and recreational fisheries have been introduced over the last five years, e.g. for recreational fishers a daily bag limit has been put in place. It is likely that this bag limit have affected the harvest of cod and the behavior and satisfaction of the cod anglers. Your task will be to explore how the bag limit affects the fisheries and the anglers. Since 2016 DTU aqua has conducted more than 1700 interviews of cod anglers fishing from charter boats in the Western Baltic. Between 2016 and 2019 the anglers have faced different regulation regimes, i.e. from no bag limit to a daily bag limit of 3 to 7 cod depending on year and season.. We will provide you with data from the 1700 interviews and you should extract, analyse and present data that evaluates how catch rates, release rates and human dimension aspects (e.g. angler motivations, dedication and satisfaction) change under different regulation regimes.
