Efficient integration of additional wind and solar power in the power system in Cyprus requires rethinking of the design and operation of the entire power system. The power system in Cyprus is an island system – no power lines to the continent. The main power generation is based on thermal power plants. But an increasing part of the generation comes from wind and solar power generation. Already today, the wind power generation is curtailed during periods with high wind and low consumption (during nights).

The University of Cyprus plans to install 10 MW PV and 1 MW / 1 MWh battery at their new university campus in Nicosia. The battery (and the PV inverters) can be used to optimise the value of the solar power generation, both for the university and for the power system.

The Master Thesis should analyse, compare and evaluate different strategies and solutions to optimise the integration of more wind and solar power in the power system – both regarding design and operation.
