Synthesis of poly(ethylene glycol) based macromonomers for antifouling of surfaces

Macromonomers based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and other new monomers with antifouling/antibacterial properties should be synthesized from a low molecular weight PEG. Possibilities of incorporation of different antifouling moieties should be investigated and tested in an experimental project.

The purpose of the project is to prepare novel polymers for antifouling or antibacterial coatings of surfaces. Prevention of fouling on polymer surfaces plays an essential role in development of novel polymers for applications in biological environments such as implants, drug packaging, coatings and sensors. It is of utmost importance that it is possible to control the surface chemistry and the interactions with the surroundings, as well as to be able to characterize this efficiently.

In the project novel antifouling systems should be prepared based on PEG, which is well known to have good antifouling properties. A short literature study will form the basis for the project, where different interesting antifouling moieties should be identified and subsequently introduced experimentally into new PEG based macromonomers. 

The project is part of a larger investigation where a fast screening process can be used to investigate the efficiency of novel antifouling polymers. Preparation, characterization and testing of antifouling polymer surfaces are normally conducted in a time consuming way, involving several steps and preparation of a substantial number of samples. In the second part of the project, this screening method will be applied to investigate the efficiency of the prepared polymers for coatings. If time permits, the influence of surface mobility in the coating should also be investigated.
