Image analysis of a skin disease in fish

Background:
Red mark syndrome (RMS) is an emerging disease affecting rainbow trout in aquaculture in Europe. The disease is characterized by the development of large red marks on the skin of the fish. At the fish diseases group within DTU Aqua we are presently conducting research on this disease. We have an infection model in our aquarium facilities at Lyngby campus where we follow the development of the red marks, and acquire standardized images at regular intervals. All fish are currently tagged with a so-called “PIT tag” so we can identify individual fish. We already have a large database of thousands of images ready to be analyzed.

What we need:
We need someone with good skills within image analysis to investigate several aspects of this disease.
The most important of these is the objective assessment of the development of skin changes in individual fish over the course of the disease.
Other focuses of interest, which could collectively reduce handling of the experimental animals, are:
Image recognition of individual fish
Estimating size

Forudsætninger

Students should have a background in image analysis, mathematical modeling, machine learning or similar.
