Impact of varying Sea Surface Temperature on a Meso-Scale model

The daily change of sea surface temperature has short and longer-term climate impacts; it can affect the exchange of heat and gas between the atmosphere and the ocean. Meso-scale models, like the Weather Research & Forecast (WRF) model used at DTU Wind Energy for wind resource assessment, typically consider the sea surface as a lower boundary with constant temperature.

WRF simulations using a varying sea surface temperature boundary condition showed important changes in the estimated surface fluxes and wind speed. Such deviations can have an impact on short-term forecasting and wind resource assessment. 

This project will focus on the in-depth analysis of the modelled outputs in order to establish the exact impact of varying sea surface temperature and quantify its effect.

The proposed project is relevant for offshore wind energy as validation of meso-scale models is essential prior to the wind resource assessment. 

The main project load will be distributed in:
  • literature review regarding observations of sea surface temperature from space, meso-scale modelling and validation studies 
  • learning how to obtain SST data for WRF
  • learning how to obtain and process meso-scale model outputs
  • perform the model inter-comparison, including sensitivity tests on the parameters influencing the results
  • writing of the thesis/report

Forudsætninger

Candidates should have good skills in programming using at least 1 language (Matlab, Octave, Python). Good statistical background will be necessary along with critical thinking and motivation.
