The MAX IV (http://www.maxiv.lu.se) synchrotron radiation lightsource in Lund, Sweden became operational in June 2016. It is a world leading X-ray scattering facility with unprecedented beam properties. operational in 2016. In the first phases 14 beamlines are going to be built, all in various stages of design and construction. The technical challenge in the design of beamlines is to preserve the high X-ray beam quality. Attention must be paid to such things as heat loads, aberrations and mirror imperfections to name a few. To tackle the very complex problem of optimizing beamlines for their intended purpose a team at MAX IV develops accurate computer models with the aid of a number of programs: Shadow3, Ray, and McXtrace for ray-tracing, Comsol for heat loads and mechanical deformation, and MASH, a home-brew from MAX IV that stitches everything together (configuration, automation, data exchange, data analysis).
These computer models greatly aid in the process of beamline design as, for instance, tolerances for various imperfections may be tried out, new concepts tested, etc.
