Measurement of CO2 fluxes through the land - atmosphere interface

The eddy covariance method is being applied at more than 600 ecosystem study sites across the globe (http://fluxnet.fluxdata.org/data/) to measure the CO2 water and energy exchange between the terrestrial surface and the atmosphere. One of the longest CO2 flux records has been collected at the Danish beech forest site, Sorø (DK-Sor), which is hosted by DTU and part of the ecosystem observation network of the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS, http://www.icos-denmark.dk/) .

We offer a special project to learn how to process the 10 Hz turbulence data from the eddy covariance system using the newest available methodology. The work includes application of eddy covariance software tools and statistical analysis.

An ideal number of students for this project will be between three and six students with complementary interests and skills. The first half of the project will be hands-on teaching and exercises; the second half of the project will be solving a special problem with flux measurements. The  project gives an excellent opportunity to learn how to effectively use the R programming language to solve problems in research and environmental engineering practice.

Advanced knowledge in the use of turbulent flux measurements is a great advantage for ecosystems and atmospheric research.
