Assessing the effect of spatio-temporal resolution for monitoring crops in Africa with METEOSAT

This project focuses on use of METEOSAT data for sustainable farming in Africa. The aim is to use data from geostationary satellites which are availablein real time for areas around equator for land surface applications.

One of the big challenges when using satellite data for agricultural applicationsin Africa is that the common free and open satellite data from the Copernicus program Sentinel missions are not available very frequently. Some of the Copernicus satellites only revisit the same spot every 21 days which is not enough for monitoring crops. In particular in cloud prone areas this may result in very few optical image acquisitions.

EUMETSAT has a   set of geostationary satellites which have much highertemporal resolution of 15 minutes, however since they are geostationary the spatial resolution is lower than from Copernicus Low Earth Orbiting satellites. The focus of this project is to assess the effect of spatial and temporal resolution on satellite derived land surface products like vegetation indices, land surfacetemperature, surface soil moisture and other related bio/geophysical parameters of relevance for agricultural production.

Development in Python or Java.

Task:
•Process METEOSAT images and compare with Sentinel.
•Downscaling of METEOSAT with Sentinel
