In a collaboration with the Blood Bank, we are investigating methods to determine the elasticity and/or deformability of red blood cells.
One procedure involves optical trapping by a two-beam optical trap, a so-called optical stretcher. In this device, the red blood cells flow slowly past the position of an optical trap in which they may be stopped and stretched by optical forces.
Another procedure involves deforming the cells by shear forces from liquid flow through a narrow constriction.
A priori, the project is mainly experimental or with a focus on data analysis through analysis of series of images.
