Development of Personalized ventilation in bedroom for improved sleep quality

People spend approx. 30% of their life time in bed. Indoor environment (air temperature, humidity, air movement, air pollution, etc.) has direct impact on people’s sleep quality and physical recovery (thus on their work performance) as well as healing of sick people. Thus, it affects peoples’ well-being. This project aims to study the performance of a new method for ventilation of bedrooms. The air is supplied by a specially developed air terminal device (attached to the ceiling) and delivering clean outdoor air directly to the breathing zone of the person lying in bed. LED lamps are installed in the device to provide optimal lighting. Experiments will be performed in a climate chamber furnished as a bedroom. The environment in the chamber will be controlled. A full-size breathing thermal manikin will be used to resemble a person lying in a bed. One tracer gas will be used to mimic polluted air exhaled by the manikin. Second tracer gas will be used to mimic pollution generated by other source placed in the room. The importance of room air temperature, supply air temperature and amount of supplied air on the cleanness of the air inhaled by the manikin and the heat loss (total and local) from manikin’s body will be studied. The obtained results will be used to assess the inhaled air quality and thermal comfort of a person lying in the bed.

This project is planned to start 1 August 2019 till 31 December 2019.
