Analysis of geomagnetic variations using ground observatory records
Earth's magnetic field is not static, but undergoes changes across a broad range of time scales from minutes to hundreds of years. The best available time series recording this process come from geomagnetic observatories.
In this project new methods of isolating changes in the main part of the magnetic field, that is essential for navigational applications, will be tested and compared with recent satellite data from ESA's Swarm mission. In particular, the impact of using only data from dark times (that is less influenced by the ionosphere) and dedicated criteria for polar latitudes will be assessed.
