Arsenic is a well-known byproduct of mining and coal incineration, but also occurs naturally in drinking water reservoirs all over the world. In the environment, arsenic may also arise from chemiclas used for wood conservation, and insecticides ( in the old days, rats were tacled with arsenic).
Based on data from well-known polluted areas, the student should work out an assessment of the effect of exposure to arsenic through drinking water on the occurrence of cancer forms such as bladder cancer, and an assessment of the relevance of previous and current american exposure limits of 10 and 50
ppb, respectively. Furthermore, the student will work out an assessment of the current level of this problem in Denmark, based on current and recent ground water measurements.

Statistics and Data Analysis, one of the main areas of
expertise is mathematical modelling of practical problems and real-life
situations, and the proces of extracting information from such situations. The
student will get a taste of how such things are done, or may be done, through the project work.

Experience with practical statistics is desirable. The project work will require the use of generalized linear models.
