In many river basins around the globe, water resources are scarce and over-used (e.g. Nile, Lake Aral, North China Plane). Water resources management relies on science-based decision support systems. Such systems combine hydrological simulation models and economic valuation methods. Stochastic optimization approaches provide optimal policies for system management. A recent focus area is the "Water-Energy-Food-Nexus". This new paradigm calls for joint management of water, energy and food resources and takes the inter-relations between these systems into account.
Together with COWI, we are working on an open-source hydroeconomic optimization modelling tool, which is implemented in python (pyomo) and interfaces with QGIS.
There are many project opportunities in this context. Projects can focus on the continued development of the open-source tool (adding new features / expanding capabilities) or on the application for concrete case studies around the world (China, Africa).
