Full Scale Validation of Self-Propulsion using CFD

Resistance and self-propulsion has for generations been demonstrated by model test but today the
viscous RANS calculations have matured and have reached a higher accuracy. In the industry the application of CFD is widely accepted. The validation of the CFD calculations are based on model tests mainly as the availability of reliable data sets of full scale trials is poor. Compared to the controlled environment in the model test basin, the environment in real life at for instance sea trials is complex. Waves, wind, current, shallow water, building accuracy, measuring equipment, sensor placement are some of the challenges.

Full scale validation data are available for:
• Resistance simulations
• Open water characteristics
• Self-propulsion simulations
• Propeller cavitation simulations

The aim of the project is to validate simulations in the CFD solver, Star-CCM+, with the full scale data.
