Westward drift of the Earth's magnetic field
Earth's magnetic field constantly changes. It has been noticed that
some concentrations of magnetic field drift westwards, but the
phenomenon is not well characterized or understood.
project, the student will analyse global models of the Earth's magnetic
field models, derived from satellite magnetic data (including from the
Swarm mission), in order to characterize the westward drift rate of
field concentrations at the core-mantle boundary. The time-dependence
of the drift rate, and its dependence on geomagnetic latitude and the
size of the field feature will explored.
