Frosting and de-frosting of air source evaporators for district heating heat pumps.

According to the government goals, the 400+ district heating companies are expected to supply CO2 neutral heating by 2035. Feasible technologies exist, but few investments are made, partly due to uncertainties of future energy subsidies/taxes, partly due to the hesitation related to large investments, and partly due to limited knowledge of the performance. One of the frequently considered possibilities is a heat pump with an air source evaporator. In terms of both running cost and investments, air heat sources may be advantageous, compared to other sources. On the other hand, the heat source temperature is low during the period with highest heat demand of buildings.

The first examples of such heat pumps are currently being build and tested. A large part of the operation hours will be at ambient temperatures and humidity, which allows ice to build on the surface. The effect of such operation is the focus of the thesis. The student is expected to compare experimental data from the real performance test to a model of a heat pump evaporator, and if possible validate the model. By use of the validated/verified model, the student should evaluate various parameters related to de-frosting, and if possible present new ideas for cost efficient operation.
