Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death globally and were the cause of 1/3 of all deaths in the Western world in 2013.

It is estimated that 90% of CVD is preventable, thus, exams of the cardiovascular system are beneficial for evaluation, prevention and treatment.

Alterations of blood flow and dynamics are seen for almost all CVD of the heart. Hence, blood flow estimation is essential in the assessment of CVD, and is done both invasively and non-invasively depending on the heart condition.

Being able to observe cardiac blood flow velocity, volume flow rates, and pressure gradients in 3D in vivo will provide new insights into CVD. To evaluate emerging techniques for 3D in vivo imaging of the heart finite element models are often used as the reference.

This project covers design and validation of a finite element model of the biomechanics of human heart which covers both the fluid and solid mechanics.

The imaging data that is needed for the reconstruction of the cardiac geometry are obtained from the Østerbro study.

The project is expected to include segmentation of the human heart from CT scans, application of a blood flow model and a structural model of the cardiac muscle, and evaluation of model performance.

Forudsætninger

This project comprises elements of fluid mechanics, structural mechanics and image processing. The student(s) should have experience with Matlab and Comsol Multiphysics.
