Combination of electric boilers and large-scale heat pumps for district heating supply

Large-scale heat pumps can be used to supply district heating. In order to do so the system has to be able to cover peak heat demands and the high supply temperatures needed during these hours. However, designing the heat pump for very high supply temperatures comes along with increased investment cost. Alternatively, an electric heater could be used to boost the temperature supplied by the heat pump during high demand periods. Even though the efficiency of an electric boiler is lower than of the heat pump, the additional fuel cost might be paid back by the saved investment cost for the heat pump. The task of this project is to conduct an economic analysis for this case in order to find out whether using the electric boiler for increasing the forward temperature is beneficial and under which circumstances. The following aspects should be included

-          Acquisition of additional economic data for large scale heat pumps

-          Economic analysis for heat pump and electric boiler operation of one year (i.e. including variable heat demand and forward temperatures)

-          Analysis of the efficiency of the possible integration methods

-          Analysis of the optimal temperature that should be supplied by the heat pump

-          Analysis of the optimal capacity of the electric boiler

Possible additional tasks for Master students

-          Operation planning using GAMS

-          Include the possibility to act on the regulation market with EB and HP (within its respective limits).
