Carbon dioxide sequestration in bioenergy plantations

The IPCC greenhouse gas emission scenarios to reach a global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius include carbon negative renewable energy production. One option is using bioenergy combined with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). For this, the actual carbon uptake and storage in bioenergy systems needs to be determined.

We offer a project to determine the net carbon uptake into a three bioenergy plantations based on biomass and soil C inventory and continuous atmospheric CO2 flux measurements. The practical work includes comparative soil carbon stock measurements in three adjacent biomass plantations.

The results will be interpreted in the context of the already existing data on soil carbon stocks (2014, Bikuña et al., 2017), biomass growth, biomass yields and atmospheric CO2 budgets.

Ideally, the work would be performed in a team of two to four students with complementing interests in field work, chemical analysis and data analysis.
