Sea ice classification of airborne radar measurements in the Arctic and Antarctic

Validation data to support classification of space derived sea ice algorithms are important, and so far mostly based on visible images, which are limited to daylight hours and clear conditions (no clouds).
In this project, the aim is to make a tool, which can identify sea ice leads in the sea ice pack and act as validation data for satellite missions which are dependent on the identification of leads, e.g. European Space Agency's CryoSat mission. The student will work with radar waveforms from airborne sensor ASIRAS together with visible images from e.g. Sentinel-2.
