McStas is a software package for neutron ray-tracing simulation which has been extensively used for design
and optimization of instruments at reactors and spallation neutron sources.
The project aims to simulate a new single crystal neutron diffraction instrument for the ISIS neutron and muon
source of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in UK. (To extend and complement the capabilities of the existing SXD instrument.)
Single crystal neutron diffraction is a powerful technique to study the structure-property relationship in a
variety of materials, especially those requiring the determination of light elements in the presence of heavy
ones, differentiation of isotopes and many crystallographic problems for which x-rays cannot give a definitive
The conceptual design of the new single crystal diffractometer is being developed at RAL but many simulations
are required to optimise the components to produce the final design and calculate the definitive specifications.
NOTE: This project is a collaboration between the DTU and the ISIS Neutron and Muon source at RAL (UK).
The student is required to spend some time at DTU learning the basic features of the McStas software in the
NEXMAP group and some time at RAL (UK) in order to carry out the actual simulations of the instrument
under the supervision of the scientist in charge of this development project at ISIS.
