Does tagging of fish affect their health

Implanting passive transponder tags (PIT-tags) into fish to individually tag them is a widespread method used to explore fish behavior. Pit tags are typically 23 mm long and weigh less than a gram. Fish usually suffer no mortality from this procedure. However, it is not well studied if PIT-tagging has any short-term consequences on the immune system. The surgical implanted pit-tags could potentially cause an immune response.

In this project, fish will be kept in the lab under constant conditions and immune function will be monitored via blood samples. Then, half of all fish will be implanted with pit-tags, while the other half remains un-tagged. Subsequently blood samples will be taken at different time points to assess if the pit-tagging produces any form of an immune response.

This project is ideally suited as a short MSc-project, a BSc-project or a Special course. The project includes a combination of animal experiments under lab conditions and lab work. The student will learn how to keep fish in an experimental setting, how to take blood samples and how to tag fish. Later the student will learn how to analyse immune function from the collected blood samples. The starting date of this project is fully flexible and the duration of this project is negotiable.
